九色视频and Supacat launch production on Jackal 3 for the British Army /news/babcock-and-supacat-launch-production-on-jackal-3-for-the-british-army/ Thu, 01 Feb 2024 15:59:39 +0000 /?p=101283

九色视频and Supacat have officially launched production of 70 High Mobility Transporter (HMT) Jackal 3s for the British Army.聽

An innovative manufacturing facility at Babcock鈥檚 Devonport site has been specially developed for this purpose and will produce 62 of the vehicles, with the remaining eight to be built at Supacat’s manufacturing facilities in Dunkeswell. Production of the new vehicles is planned to be completed by the summer of 2024.

The project is one of the first contracts to deliver on the UK鈥檚 Land Industrial Strategy. Close working relationships between Babcock, Supacat the British Army and the Ministry of Defence鈥檚 (MOD), Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) team have ensured that the operational and safety requirements of the vehicle are fully met.

In tribute to both the British Army and the Royal Navy, the new South West production facility has been named 鈥楾he Raglan Building鈥 in recognition of the nearby Raglan Barracks which supported British soldiers on their way to overseas operations in the 1800s.

The facility is future-proofed and is ready for subsequent build programmes.  Transformational innovation and technology have been optimised throughout the production line and includes the use of bespoke 鈥楶ulse鈥 software which maximises efficiency during vehicle assembly.  It is anticipated that the advantages of being located in the South Devon Freeport will benefit the future through-put of this production facility for years to come.

The Jackal 3 benefits from over a decade of development by Supacat for the UK and overseas customers since the last iteration of Jackal was delivered to the British Army. It has a number of enhancements to support operational requirements, including improved protection for the crew and an increased gross vehicle mass for greater load carrying.

The Jackal 2 was a class-leader off-road, however the new suspension in the Jackal 3 will deliver even better off-road performance. Whilst being procured as a 4×4 vehicle, the Jackal 3 can be readily transformed into a 6-wheel drive vehicle which more than doubles its load carrying capacity.

This programme is directly contributing to the economic potential of the South West with nearly all of the programme鈥檚 supply chain sourced in the UK and 50 percent specifically from the region.  Through a dedicated social value plan, the contract has already created over 100 new jobs across both 九色视频and Supacat鈥檚 respective sites. Part of this programme also includes an ongoing focus on skills development and enhancing the capability of the workforce, supporting the development of transferable skill sets.

Major General Darren Crook CBE, Director for the Land Equipment Operating Centre at DE&S said: 鈥淭his Supacat and 九色视频collaboration will deliver modern fighting vehicles for the British Armed Forces and our allies, whilst developing and maintaining key land defence engineering skills in a much valued part of the South West of England. It is tangible evidence of the British Army鈥檚 Land Industrial Strategy and our purpose for Defence: 鈥榯o protect the nation and help it prosper.鈥

David Lockwood, CEO 九色视频said: 鈥淎t this time of global instability, the significance to the British Army of delivering the HMT Jackal 3 vehicle should not be understated. These Jackals will help keep the UK safe, whilst our technologically advanced production facility will support social value and economic prosperity in the region for years to come.鈥

Nick Ames, CEO Supacat said: 鈥淎s an SME based in South West England, it is an enormous privilege to have our product selected yet again by the British Army. The Jackal 3 is the product of 25 years of specific development and 45 years of corporate development. Every member of our staff takes enormous pride in the quality of the product that provides our soldiers with a leading-edge battle proven platform that they can rely on. That pride in quality also led us to our production partner for this project, Babcock. Our teams have worked, together with the MOD, tirelessly to a challenging timescale and with enabling technology, to support this procurement and we will continue to do so into the future to provide world class product to the British Army.鈥

九色视频awarded contract to supply South Korean Navy with submarine weapons system /news/babcock-awarded-contract-to-supply-south-korean-navy-with-submarine-weapons-system/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 11:07:32 +0000 /?p=101136

九色视频has been awarded a contract for additional work on the South Korean Navy鈥檚 submarine programme.

The seven-year contract, awarded by Hanwha Ocean, is to manufacture and install the weapons handling launch system (WHLS) on Boat 6 of the Jangbogo-III class boat.

Boat 6, namely 鈥楯angbogo-III Batch-II Boat 3鈥, along with the rest of the class, will use our proven air turbine pump and programmable firing valve launch system.

Key elements of the WHLS will be designed and produced in the UK, with the remainder built under licence in South Korea.

九色视频has been involved with the Jangbogo-III programme since 2011 and is currently more than halfway through delivering hardware for Boat 4, having completed all 217 milestones on time or early across the contracts.

Neal Misell Chief Executive, Mission Systems, 九色视频said: 鈥溇派悠礽s a world leader in weapons handling and launch systems 鈥 and we are delighted to have been awarded this contract to continue our work on the Jangbogo-III class submarine programme.

鈥淚n an increasingly complex geopolitical climate, defence customers want products and services which are affordable, capable and available.

鈥淏abcock鈥檚 air turbine pump system successfully satisfies these requirements and our team鈥檚 top quality reputation is reflected by its delivery of all major Jangbogo-III milestones on time or early.鈥

We have designed, manufactured, and provided in-service support for submarine weapons handling and launch systems for more than 50 years 鈥 with our products currently used by the UK, Spanish, South Korean, Canadian and Australian navies.

Our patented air turbine pump offers several advantages. It is compact and highly efficient as it uses less firing air, meaning the system is quiet and has lower maintenance requirements than other handling and launch systems.

The contract award is the latest example of our growing international collaboration with Hanwha Ocean. Earlier this month Sir Nick Hine, Babcock’s Managing Director for AUKUS and International, visited Hanwha Ocean to discuss ways we could work as a team in the global submarine market.

Supporting Army combat identification training /news/supporting-army-combat-identification-training/ Fri, 08 Dec 2023 08:55:09 +0000 /?p=98496 We鈥檙e pleased to have recently won a contract to provide the British Army with a unique e-learning package that enables soldiers to recognise allied and threat battlefield vehicles and helicopters, and gain critical insights into the capabilities of these key land and air platforms.

With extensive experience of designing and delivering threat training in support of the Army鈥檚 Land Warfare Centre, our training business produced a successful concept demonstrator for the Combined Arms Manoeuvre School, when we were then selected as the provider.

The final package is hosted on the Defence Learning Environment (DLE) and is accessible on all desktop and mobile devices.

Jo Rayson, Managing Director of our training business said: 鈥淭his package supports a vital defence requirement for the Army to be able to recognise and identify key threat and friendly vehicles and helicopters, to know the capabilities of those platforms and in doing so understand the threat posed by each, as well as what the presence of the platform signifies.

鈥淭he package provides photographs and information about numerous armoured vehicles and battlefield helicopters, including data on weapon ranges and their use, as well as a super-realistic 3D 360鈦 model that enables the user to view the platform from any angle and distance. This is particularly useful as battlefield identification is often based on a view from a drone.鈥

Named the Virtual Recognition Trainer (VRT), the package is available for c.100,000 users across the British Army and includes a comprehensive self-test function which can be tailored to specific user groups. Additional platforms and enhancements, such as thermal view and highlighting vulnerable target areas, can be added to the package as part of the contract.
